Chattanooga's topography does a lot of the decision-making for you. A flat lot in Hixson and a sloped property on the side of Lookout Mountain have almost nothing in common from a landscape design standpoint, and a plan that works on one site would be a problem on the other. Good landscape design in this market starts with reading the site before it starts with aesthetics.

We amend soil before anything goes in the ground, select species proven in Zone 7b and 8a, and install at the right depth and spacing so plants establish rather than struggle through their first summer. Tree and shrub planting gets done with the right hole dimensions, the right backfill, and proper mulching that retains moisture without creating crown rot.

Southern Appalachian natives like native azaleas, mountain laurel, river birch, oakleaf hydrangea, and Virginia sweetspire perform reliably here. Crape myrtles, loropetalum, and ornamental grasses handle the valley heat well. We make selections based on the specific conditions of each planting area rather than defaulting to whatever is popular at the garden center.
